SCOTTISH MEP, Catherine Stihler, got a real flavour of community projects supported by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust when she visited the Bridge Café in West Bridge Mill, Kirkcaldy.
Mrs Stihler was treated to lunch prepared and served by some of the young people the Bridge Café helps into work and training.
Mrs Stihler also visited Fife Gingerbread in Methil, and Fife Women’s Technology Centre in Lochgelly.
Nicky Wilson, Scottish Trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust in Scotland, said: “These projects are good examples of how the organisations we support can make a real difference to local communities which are still suffering from the loss of the mining industry.
“Improving the quality of life in these areas is what the Coalfields Regeneration Trust is all about.”
The Bridge Cafe provides much needed café facilities, runs healthy eating classes, and provides employment and training opportunities for disadvantaged groups.
Fife Women’s Technology Centre is a community based learning centre which provides a wide range of technology training, including courses for young people not in education or training.
Fife Gingerbread offers support and advice to lone parents with children of all ages.
All three organisations have received substantial grants from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
Mrs Stihler said: “I was very impressed with the commitment of the staff in these projects, and the enthusiasm they generate.
“The Coalfields Regeneration Trust plays a vital role in promoting social and economic regeneration in former coalfields in Fife, across Central Scotland and the rest of the UK.
“By working with local communities on the ground the Coalfields Regeneration Trust is helping people into training and work.
“The Trust truly puts people first by supporting local organisations, many of which also benefit from European funding.”
