DESPITE the gloomy economic climate, there are signs that the recession has not dented charitable giving, with some charities even predicting a record growth in donations.
One such charity is the Scottish Community Foundation, organiser of the RBS Caledonian Challenge, a fundraising event which takes place annually in June. To date, there has been a ten per cent increase in the number of teams signed-up for the 2009 event, with fundraising figures up by a staggering 300 per cent compared to the same time in 2008.
Teams of walkers trek 54 miles in 24 hours in the Challenge, taking in stretches of the Great Glen Way and West Highland Way, en route. The participants’ fundraising efforts benefit hundreds of small Scottish charities and local community groups that the Foundation distributes funds to each year.
Despite the numbers already taking on this year’s RBS Caledonian Challenge, organisers are encouraging more walkers of all abilities to sign up and put their best foot forward for those less fortunate.
John Mercer, event director from SCF Events, said: “I know that a lot of smaller charities and community groups have been quite concerned about the knock-on effect of a recession on their income, as they lack the visibility of larger charities with significant marketing budgets. In many ways, I believe the current economic situation has allowed us to take stock of what we do have and how fortunate we are.”
