HIGHLANDS and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and partners have recently been raising awareness of the opportunities that cheaper ferry fares offer businesses where the Scottish Government’s Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) pilot is operating.
Events to stimulate ideas have been held in Coll, Tiree, Barra, Benbecula, Harris, Lewis and the gateway communities of Ullapool and Uig on Skye.
Staff from HIE, Halcrow Consulting and the Scottish Government joined members of the public, businesses and communities to discuss how communities can get best advantage from the cheaper fares that the RET pilot currently provides.
The low cost fares have the potential to create additional opportunities in each of the regions through stimulating visitor numbers; increasing the attractiveness of the areas as places to live and work; opening up new markets for local produce and boosting collaboration between island communities.
At each event brainstorming sessions were held to look at the different ways that each area could potentially benefit.
