MORE women are coming forward for cervical screening in Lothian and the Borders, according to new figures.
There was a 30 per cent increase in the number of smears processed by NHS Lothian’s laboratories between May and October 2008 compared to the same timeframe in 2007.
Rising participation in the screening programme is being ascribed to increased awareness as a result of a number of factors, including the media coverage of the illness suffered by celebrity, Jade Goody, and publicity around the cervical cancer vaccine.
The NHS Lothian laboratory processes samples for both Lothian and the Borders.
