Media Release: Glasgow hotels enjoy best ever August despite wet weather and economic ‘gloom’

OCCUPANCY of Glasgow hotels was one per cent higher last month than in August 2007, in contrast to the previous three months when city accommodation providers had begun to feel the impact of the ‘credit crunch’.
The figures taken from research undertaken by Lynn Jones Research for Greater Glasgow Hotels Association show that average occupancy of Glasgow hotels in August 2008 was 86 per cent, compared to 85 per cent in August the previous year – the highest for any August since such records began in 1999.
The performance is attributed to a combination of the 6,000-delegate World Congress on Pain, which met in Glasgow from 17 – 22 August, events and entertainment including the World Pipe Band Championships and Piping Live! and an online advertising campaign run by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB).
Councillor Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, commented: “This is fantastic news, particularly in light of current economic conditions. The World Congress on Pain was secured for the city some seven years ago, but the Bureau can also be very light on its feet.”
