TAKING all UK retail sales figures into account, Shayne sold close to 100,000 copies
of his album on Monday and Tuesday and is set to sell well over 200,000 copies by
the end of the week – perhaps even reaching the quarter of a million mark if he has
a particularly strong Saturday.
On this showing Shayne has already done enough to secure the No.1 spot when the next
Official UK Album Chart is announced on Sunday – a feat he is achieving by currently
outselling the rest of the top 20 combined. This includes the new release from the
Zutons, ‘Tired Of Hanging Around’, which is the UK’s second-best seller at the
moment.
Although Shayne is not quite matching the incredible Arctic Monkeys phenomenon from
earlier this year, if this sales trend continues over the week it would represent a
fantastic achievement – making him one of the few UK recording artists to enjoy both
a debut No.1 single and album. It would also eclipse the debut chart performance of
the original Pop Idol, Will Young, who’s ‘From Now On’ album sold 187,350 copies in
its first week in October 2002.
