HMV stores around the country report that Madonna’s disco-inspired ‘Confessions on a
Dancefloor’ is flying off their shelves and is currently outselling Westlife’s ‘Face
to face’ in second spot by a margin of 2:1. Madonna is therefore on track to sell
close to 200,000 copies of the album across all retailers.
In fact, with ‘Hung Up’ likely to top the Singles charts for a second week (ahead of
‘Switch it On’ – the new release from Will Young) – Madonna is in line to top both
charts simultaneously – joining James Blunt and Westlife as the only artists to have
achieved the feat this year.
Phil Penman, HMV head of Music comments: “Yet again, Madonna has successfully reinvented herself – this time as a Disco Diva – to dominate the charts once more.
“Unlike other iconic artists still recording today, Madonna continues to make music
that compares favourably to any of her previous releases. She has not become a
parody of herself, but remains a vibrant, creative talent who is making music which
is arguably as good as anything else she has put out over the last twenty years.
You can’t really say that about any other artist.”
