MANY HMV stores opened early only to find eager fans already queuing outside,
including people keen to pick up a copy on their way to work.
Based on these early indications, ‘X & Y’ could well sell over 100,000 copies today alone across all UK retailers, and more than 400,000 copies over the course of the week.
Indeed, some Industry commentators are predicting that the critically acclaimed album will go on to break through the half a million sales mark come Saturday – a feat only achieved in modern recording history by Oasis’ ‘Be Here Now’, which sold just under 696,000 copies in its first week in August 1997, and remains the fastest selling album.
Gennaro Castaldo of HMV stores comments: “We haven’t seen anything like this since Oasis released ‘Be Here Now’ now in August 1997. The excitement around ‘X & Y’ is palpable and has been building for quite some time now.
“The band certainly haven’t disappointed – both critically and
commercially; it’s an absolutely brilliant recording that will take Coldplay onto the next level of global superstardom, and it’s fair to say that we’re already looking at the biggest album of the year by far.”
