SCOTLAND is well-represented in the nominations for this year’s Orange British Academy Film Awards announced today.
Scots director, Kevin Macdonald’s feature film debut, The Last King of Scotland, garnered further accolades with five nominations including Best Film, The Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Morgan and Jeremy Brock, Best Actor for Forest Whitaker, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Scots actor James McAvoy.
It’s been an outstanding year for multi award-winning Red Road, and the BAFTA nomination of Andrea Arnold for The Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Director, Writer or Producer in their First Feature Film, is further recognition.
Stephen Frears’ The Queen, which showcases Scotland’s magnificent scenery, has also had an excellent year, gaining awards and nominations from around the world. The film is up for an impressive ten nominations including Best Film, The Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year, The David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction, Best Original Screenplay for Peter Morgan, Best Actress in a Leading Role for Helen Mirren, and Michael Sheen for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
Scots producer Iain Smith’s film The Children of Men picked up a number of nominations including Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Achievement in Special Visual Effects.
Two Scottish shorts have been nominated for Best Short Film, a fantastic achievement. The films are BAFTA Scotland winner Hikikomori written and directed by Paul Wright and produced by Karley Duffy, and Tartan Short Kissing, Tickling & Being Bored, written and directed by Jim McRoberts and produced by David Smith.
Ken Hay, chief executive of Scottish Screen said: “It’s been a fantastic year for Scottish films and this is further recognition of the excellent and innovative work that has been produced here. Scottish Screen would like to congratulate all the nominees and wish them the best of luck. It will be an exciting night.”
The Awards will be held on Sunday 11 February 2007 at the Royal Opera House in London.
