AN interactive CD ROM, produced by NHS Lothian in conjunction with OUI3 Design &
Multimedia Company, is being launched at Broomhouse and St Joseph’s Primary School
Campus on Tuesday 27th March between 09:30 and 11am.
The new oral health education CD ROM for young children aims to teach children the
benefits of having a healthy mouth and Andy Kerr MSP, Minister for Health and
Community Care will be the guest speaker at the launch of ‘Crunchy the Croc’.
The CD is being distributed to all nurseries, nursery classes and child and family
centres across Lothian and will also be a valuable resource for P1 and P2 children.
‘Crunchy the Croc’ CD ROM consists of several activities, which help to engage
children in finding out about making healthy choices. These activities include
educational games, which aim to improve memory and hand-eye co-ordination, and facts
about oral health.
Worksheets can be printed off and used, either in the classroom
as part of the children’s everyday learning outcomes, or taken home to reinforce the
oral health messages to parents and carers.
Janis Logan, principal oral health promoter, NHS Lothian said:
“It is extremely important for us to enable children to adopt a good oral health
regime as early as possible in life and the CD ROM is a perfect way to do this. It
is a fun and informative way for children to learn about making the right choices
for looking after their teeth.
“The launch should be a lot of fun -the children will be involved in singing songs
about toothbrushing and eating healthily, and the nursery children will be told a
story about looking after their teeth.
“Our thanks go to The Edinburgh Community Food Initiative which is contributing to
the launch by providing healthy snacks during the refreshment break. “
Andy Kerr, Minister for Health and Community Care said:
“The use of a colourful cartoon character is a great way to get kids attention to
teach them vital lessons about oral health.”
