BEANSCENE, the coffee and music house chain expanding rapidly across Scotland, has been revealed as the anchor tenant at the Heart of Hawick, the multi-agency arts and heritage initiative opening at the start of June designed to make a substantial contribution to the social, cultural and economic regeneration of Hawick and the wider Borders.
By rejuvenating three historical buildings in the town’s West End, the Heart of Hawick aims to create a community asset which not only establishes a variety of accessible cultural services but creates new work and training space to stimulate the local economy.
As such, Beanscene was considered to be the perfect anchor tenant for the heart of the campus at Tower Mill, a former weaving mill and category A listed building built over a river, converted into a cinema/theatre, exhibition space, visitor welcome centre, shop and workspaces for arts and media businesses.
Gordon Richardson, Beanscene founder, said: “Our participation with the Heart of Hawick project represents a great opportunity to create a destination where our core demographic of 25-54 year olds can go to spend some time with friends and families; somewhere that children are made to feel welcome; where customers can sit back and soak up some sounds while chilling out over an espresso and a bite to eat in their own backyard. As such, the Heart of Hawick is the perfect platform from which to introduce Beanscene to the Borders.

In addition to Tower Mill, the other elements of the Heart of Hawick campus are Heritage Hub, a state of the art facility, home to the region’s archives and local and family history centre and Drumlanrig’s Tower, a restored 16th Century Tower House that currently displays period rooms, audiovisuals and an exhibition programme to explain the turbulent past of the building and the town.
Councillor Valerie Robson, chair of Heart of Hawick Project Board, said: “The Heart of Hawick campus is set to be a ‘must visit’ destination for visitors to – and day trippers within – the South of Scotland. Not only will the Heritage Hub archive and local & family history centre be ‘must use’ resources for anyone interested in genealogy and the history of the Borders, but Beanscene’s involvement will be a tremendous asset to the range of facilities within Tower Mill and help balance the need to engage with a diverse mix of users and visitors – from local families and young people to national and international visitors.”
The Heart of Hawick project is a partnership, funded principally by Scottish Borders Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund. The people of Hawick and the wider Borders are major stakeholders.
