FASHION designer, Zandra Rhodes, will be awarded an honorary degree by
Heriot-Watt University in July.
Ms Rhodes will be awarded a DLitt in
recognition of her outstanding contribution to the fashion and design
industries at the university’s Scottish Borders campus graduation
ceremony in Galashiels on 9 July.
Her early textile fashion designs were considered too outrageous by the
traditional British manufacturers, so in 1969, she established her own
retail outlet in the fashionable Fulham Road in West London. She was one
of the new wave of British designers who put London at the forefront of
the international fashion scene in the 1970s. Her designs, inspired by
organic material and nature, have always been clear, creative
statements.
Other recipients of Heriot-Watt honorary degrees in 2007 include the
Guardian journalist Gary Younge, Trinidad and Tobago President and
chemical engineer President George M Richards and former Science
Minister Lord Sainsbury. They will receive their honorary degrees at the
University’s Edinburgh ceremonies, which will this year, for the first
time, be held at Heriot-Watt’s Edinburgh campus.
