MIKE Ritchie Media has been appointed to provide Public Relations support to the not-for-profit, membership organisation, the Scottish Stem Cell Network (SSCN)
The SSCN brings together scientists, academics, clinicians, business and society to enable advances in stem cell biology to be rapidly translated to deliver new treatments for degenerative diseases.
The Edinburgh-based organisation, with funding from Scottish Enterprise, is building on Scotland’s world class strengths in regenerative medicine, developing integrated approaches as well as national and international collaboration that will bring new treatments to those suffering from chronic degenerative conditions.
“Since the cloning of Dolly the Sheep in 1996, Scotland has been at the forefront of ground-breaking advances in stem cell technology,” said Dr Marilyn Robertson, SSCN’s executive director.
“But ethical and technical issues that can create public distrust, misconceptions and misguided expectations constantly need to be addressed.
“We are determined to inform and engage with the public as clearly and fully as possible as Scotland’s established centres of excellence in stem cell technology are making progress with research that, hopefully, will lead to clinical reality.
“With Mike’s appointment I believe we can get our message out effectively and positively in an informed a manner as possible.”
As a former health correspondent with a national newspaper, Mike has welcomed this opportunity to strengthen the SSCN’s links to the media and the public.
“The SSCN provides a valuable forum for the life sciences’ experts who are driving the development of stem cell technology,” he said.
“But Dr Robertson and the SSCN membership want the public to be kept informed so I’m looking forward to working with them to achieve this through increased, positive media coverage of the SSCN role.”
The SSCN joins the Glasgow-based consultancy’s client list that includes Stewart Milne Homes, Douglas Laing Whisky Blenders and Bottlers, Forrest Developments, The Al-Maktoum Institute for Islamic and Arabic Studies in Dundee and Stewarts and Murdochs Solicitors. Mike is also currently undertaking projects on behalf of The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) and the Daily Record.
