‘CURRY King’, Charan Gill, MBE was last night (13.03.07) presented with a lifetime achievement award at the inaugural Irn-Bru Curry Awards, at a glittery ceremony at Glasgow’s Thistle Hotel attended by such celebrities and public figures as Shereen Nanjiani, Carol Smillie, John Smeaton and the Lord and Lady Provost of Glasgow.
Said Charan, “I’m absolutely delighted to be presented with this award – particularly as there’s no better way to wash down a spicey chicken tikka than with an Irn-Bru – after all, a good curry and an Irn-Bru are both staples of the Glaswegian diet!”
Former shipbuilder, Charan Gill, founded his Harlequin Leisure Group in Glasgow in 1994 and built it into Europe’s largest chain of Indian restaurants before selling it in a multi-million pound deal in 2005.
His next move was to pen his autobiography, ‘Tikka Look at me Now’, star in the hit Channel 4 TV series, The Secret Millionaire, and to open Scotland House in Delhi. Last year, Charan acquired The Quay Complex in Musselburgh and only last month became non-executive director of Noah Beers in Glasgow.
