Media Release: Scottish entrepreneurial event scoops top award

AN exhibition which helps Scots entrepreneurs turn their business dreams into reality has scooped a top award at the first ever Scottish Event Awards.

New Start Scotland, the largest business event for new starts, last night (Thursday 4th September) picked up the award for Best Exhibition, beating off stiff competition from the BBC Good Food Show Scotland, Bank of Scotland Total Art and The Main Event 2008.

Ceri Rogers, New Start Scotland organiser, said: “Winning such a prestigious award has given a real boost to the entire New Start Scotland team. It’s great to see our hard work recognised by an independent panel of judges.”

Every year, over 8,000 wannabe entrepreneurs flock to the SECC to find out how to get their idea off the ground and how to grow their business further and faster. Now in its fourth year, New Start Scotland is proof that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Scotland, despite 2008 being billed as the year of the credit crunch,

A survey by New Start Scotland of over 1,000 business hopefuls revealed that, despite having fears over the economy, 86 per cent of fledgling SME owners were determined to launch their new venture this year. Only 14 per cent said that they would be postponing their launch until the economy became more stable.

Mr Rogers added: “New Start Scotland proves that, despite the credit crunch, there is still a great appetite in Scotland to be your own boss.”

“It’s encouraging that in the face of a possible recession more Scots than ever still want to start their own companies. But entrepreneurs need to be equipped with as much information as possible.”

“New Start Scotland aims to boost these figures even further by providing entrepreneurs of all ages, no matter what their idea is, a starting point from which to launch their business with a bang.”

“And while the exhibition helps thousands of entrepreneurs every year with business advice and support, our newly launched magazine – New Start – and online portal – www.newstartscotland.com – ensure that advice and guidance is available all year round.”

With over 120 exhibitors, 60 seminars as well as a variety of workshops and live features, New Start Scotland provides unrivalled business guidance for entrepreneurs trying to get their idea off the ground and those looking to grow their business further and faster.

The exhibition regularly attracts well-known entrepreneurial speakers such as underwear tycoon, Michelle Mone of Ultimo; former Dragons’ Den panellist Rachel Elnaugh of Red Letter Days fame; Chris Gorman OBE, formally of The Gadget Shop; and Tim Waterstone of Waterstone’s bookshops.

Anyone thinking of starting up their own business or looking to expand an existing business can benefit greatly from New Start Scotland. The event is completely free and provides the chance for unrivalled business guidance. Visit www.newstartscotland.com for further information.
