JOURNALIST-turned-PR man, Stan Arnaud, is preparing to cycle across Central America to raise funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.
On 6 February, Stan will join more than 50 fellow fundraisers from around the UK to spend eight days cycling 680 km (more than 420 miles) from Panama, through Costa Rica to Granada, in Nicaragua.
Stan, 45, lives in Conon Bridge, Ross-shire, with his wife Judith, nine year-old son, Joe, and six year-old daughter Kirsty and works in Inverness as communications manager for the Global Energy Group.
He previously worked in the Glasgow offices of several national newspapers and as The Press and Journal’s chief reporter in the Highlands.
He said: “I lost my mother to cancer in 2008 and my father in 1992. Macmillan gave tremendous support to them and to us as a family during their illnesses and I want to give something back through undertaking this challenge.
“The recent winter weather has made training for the challenge interesting. I’m not sure if pushing my bike through snowdrifts on the back roads of Ross-shire is the best preparation for the hot and very humid conditions we are expecting in Central America, but it’s certainly helped counteract the effects of the mince pies and other temptations of the Festive season.”
So far Stan has raised more than 70 per cent of his £3,500 minimum sponsorship target.
Of that figure, 35 per cent will be taken up in expedition costs. One hundred per cent of any sum raised over the minimum sponsorship goes to Macmillan Cancer Support.
