Media release: Matching the skills of Scotland’s workforce with employer needs

FUTURE skills demand among Scotland’s key sectors will be in focus today (February 1) at an event hosted jointly by Skills Development Scotland and the Alliance of Sector Skills Councils in Edinburgh.

The first of two sectoral Labour Market Information events, it aims to help the career guidance community and skills providers to better understand the needs of employers in a range sectors.

Skills Development Scotland chief executive, Damien Yeates, said:

“SDS is able to respond to local skills demand through nationally cohesive delivery models, ensuring exceptional value for money. It enables us to provide the tools for a focused and effective skills strategy going forward.

“Labour Market Intelligence data on the SDS website is the most visited daily site of its kind in Scotland, providing key information to better match training investment with demand.

“Today’s event is one of the many ways that we are working to ensure that channels of communication between industry demand and Scotland’s labour supply are becoming more dynamic and coherent.”

As part of their continuing professional development, around 100 careers advisers are expected to attend the event. They will meet representatives of Sector Skills Councils from a broad cross section of different sectors of the Scottish economy.

The event is designed to give careers staff a unique insight into the existing and emerging skills needs of these economic sectors – and the career opportunities potentially on offer for young people coming out of full-time education and seeking careers information, advice and guidance.

Alliance of Sector Skills Council in Scotland director, Jacqui Hepburn, said:

“Scotland’s economic opportunities are immense, but our ability to capitalise on these must not be constrained by a lack of individuals with the right skills.

“Joined-up thinking, aligning our industrial and economic approaches with the skills and employment opportunities, is vital to delivering sustainable economic growth.

“This gives individuals the knowledge and skills to perform in a constantly changing world, securing the jobs yet to be invented and harnessing the knowledge yet to be discovered..

“The transformative power of skills to deliver us out of the recessionary rut and accelerate economic growth cannot be prized highly enough, and we must continue to promote a skilled workforce, giving employers the opportunity to access the right skills at the right time and in the right place.”
