AFTER organising her own wedding from hundreds of miles away, Aberdeen-based event manager and wedding planner, Mirjam Meek-van Dalen, is well placed to offer couples advice on how to get the most out of their big day.
Dutch Mirjam first met British-born Alan in 1989 in the Netherlands, when they were both working for a large oil company, but work commitments put geography between them until 2006 when they met again.
Mirjam moved to Aberdeen and they got married just six months later.
With their wedding to take place in the Netherlands and Mirjam and Alan living in Scotland, what could have been an organisational nightmare became the realisation of a vocation of Mirjam.
And such was the extent to which she relished the challenge, that she later decided to turn wedding and event management into a business, Valley Events.
“As I approached 40, I was very keen on the idea of starting my own business and this kind of thing seemed perfect because I love organising things. I am a perfectionist almost to an annoying level and I will even straighten up the glasses on a table if I see them out of line,” laughs Mirjam.
“I think I am able to bring a bit of expertise from my home country where weddings tend to be a bit more relaxed and less formal than here in the UK.
“My role as a wedding planner is to take the stress away and put the fun back in for the bride and groom who should be left to simply enjoy their special day. People should talk about weddings and events for a long time after they happen and it is my job to make sure that is the case.”
In addition to weddings, Mirjam is also called on to arrange a wide range of other events – from corporate barbecues and birthday parties, to murder mystery dinners and barn dances.
More recently, Mirjam has been turning her creative skills to jewellery making and has created a stunning range of bridal and special occasion jewellery which is sure to make any bride sparkle.
Mirjam added: “I guess it’s that old cliché of no two events being the same, but that is really what drives me because I am able to use my creative energy and ideas to help people achieve the event they want, whatever that event might be.”
