Media release: Etape Caledonia sells out with six months to go

FIVE thousands cyclists have signed up to take part in the 2011 Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia, an IMG Challenger World event, pushing the cycling challenge to sell-out in record time this year, six months before it is actually due to take place.

This sets a new record high for the cycling challenge which last year had 4,500 participants and delivered a £1million boost to the Highland Perthshire economy.

Etape Caledonia, now in its fifth year, has grown in popularity every year since its inception from just over 1,000 participants in 2007, to over 5,000 entered in 2011.

Every year, thousands of cyclists gather on the start line alongside a stream of celebrities, Olympic athletes and charity fundraisers to take on the 81-mile cycling challenge that shows off the best of Highland Perthshire’s landscape and scenery.

With 2,500 cyclists who have already registered pledging to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2011, the charity is hoping to break the million-pound barrier in its third year of association with the event.

The charity has already put to good use over £3/4million of vital funds raised by participants over the last two years.

Jo Dytch, event director, IMG Challenger World, said: “IMG Challenger World are absolutely delighted with the extremely positive response to this year’s Etape Caledonia which looks set to continue to be a major sporting challenge in Scotland’s event calendar.

“With 5,000 cyclists coming into the area, many accompanied by friends and families, this is a very welcome boost to the local economy and a fantastic opportunity for families to spend a weekend in the stunning surroundings on Highland Perthshire.”
