BUDDING entrepreneurs at a Renfrewshire primary school have beaten off entries from across the country to win the ScottishPower Schools Best Budding Business competition.
ScottishPower rewarded St. Fillan’s Primary School in Houston with a £1,000 prize for coming up with a strong business idea which brought out the entrepreneurial skills of the youngsters.
Pupils from St. Fillan’s who took part in the initiative have been working to highlight the benefits of Fairtrade to their school and the local community by setting up their own Fairtrade café in the school.
Primary five, six and seven pupils run the café three times per week at break-time and at school events.
Pupils, staff, families and visitors can sample delights at the café which is also due to open to the local community at least once per term.
All children involved have put in a great team effort and continue to adapt to the challenges their business faces.
Anne Munro-Easton, operations manager at ScottishPower, was delighted to present the winning school with their cheque for the new initiative.
Speaking of the competition, she said: “The ScottishPower Schools Best Budding Business aims to support young business people of the future and encourage them to think about their projects and initiatives.
“We’re delighted to present St. Fillan’s Primary School Business with £1,000 for their excellent enterprise. By setting up their Fairtrade cafe, the pupils have not only shown that they have good business knowledge but also that they are socially responsible.
“This is the first year of our competition and we were very pleased to receive entries from across the country. The standard was extremely high with lots of great potential for successful business men and women of the future. The pupils of St. Fillan’s primary are deserved winners.”
Louise Maher, headteacher at St. Fillan’s Primary School, said: “Our pupils are delighted they have won this fantastic competition. We would like to thank ScottishPower for enabling our schoolchildren to gain recognition for their excellent business endeavours.
“This is an ideal way to give confidence to youngsters to excel in business from an early age and teaches them to work together to complete a project. They have learned skills which will continue to develop through their school and work careers.”
