SCOTLAND-based TUV NEL, the engineering technology services organisation, has received full accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for its Monitored Professional Development Scheme.

The accreditation granted by IMechE’s Professional Development Standards Committee is for the development of Incorporated and Chartered Engineers and will be effective for three years, until 3rd August 2013.

Says a spokesperson: “TUV NEL’s Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) is a quality-controlled route to assist new and recent graduate engineers from mechanical, chemical, electronic and electrical disciplines to achieving Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer status.

“The company set up this scheme in response to consistent feedback from its current graduates, industrial placement students and job applicants that becoming a Chartered Engineer was one of their primary career goals upon attaining their degrees.

“It therefore recognised that a structured scheme to support the route to Chartership was a critical recruitment and retention tool for engineering talent.”

Commenting on the recent accreditation, Tracy Brown, TUV NEL’s HR manager, said: “IMechE’s accreditation is a great achievement for us and it proves our excellence and commitment to operating to international standards.

“It testifies that our scheme meets the rigorous standards of IMechE for the provision of quality training, support and opportunities for developing engineering graduates to achieve Chartership.

“The MPDS aims to provide developing engineers with sufficient opportunity to meet the requirements of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

“This takes place through planned and co-ordinated exposure to different activities throughout its various business functions over their first four years with the company, and under the guidance of designated mentors. It also provides the pathway for graduates to attain the Masters level academic requirements of UK-SPEC.”

The spokesperson added: “Over the last three years, TUV NEL has successfully hired thirteen new graduates across various engineering disciplines. Achieving accreditation for its MPDS positions the company well on track to continue attracting and retaining high calibre engineering graduates through the support this will provide towards meeting their initial professional development needs.”

Sandra Mulligan, IMechE’s business development manager, Scotland, said: “The Monitored Professional Development Scheme provides a robust and comprehensive framework that supports the development of Professional Engineers.

“However, the scheme would not be successful without the support and commitment of TUV NEL.

“The company has demonstrated their desire to successfully underpin their engineering community with engineering graduates who will then be supported and nurtured on their journey to Professional Registration.

“The IMechE is delighted to be associated with TUV NEL and look forward to a happy and productive long term working relationship.”

Stuart Cameron, vice-president of the Institution, presented TUV NEL with their certificate and commented “It was very encouraging that TUV NEL are training their graduate engineers through MPDS. It is a significant commitment on their behalf and I am positive that they will reap the benefits.”
