JEWELLERY design company, Aurora, unveiled their Thurso shop window last week, with the display designed by international art director and designer, Simon Costin, to mark the Royal National Mòd.
Locals and visitors gathered at the event, which included John Macleod from An Comunn Gàidhealach, top fashion designer Sandra Murray MBE and Simon Costin himself, fresh from Milan Fashion Week.
Commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Simon’s work is on show in Aurora’s High Street window and will be on display until Friday 22nd October.
It has been designed to celebrate the Mod’s first visit to Caithness and aims to showcase various aspects of local and Gaelic culture.
Simon, who gave his time for free on this project, has worked extensively with worldwide designers creating highly-creative and imaginative art sets for photo shoots and catwalk shows. He has a personal interest in British heritage and folklore; his ambition is to create a Museum of British Folklore.
As well as meeting the designers, businesses were invited to a range of presentations from bodies including Arts and Business; Cultural Enterprise Office; Hi-Arts; Creative Highland and The Mackay Country.
Rachel Skene, head of Tourism – Caithness and North Sutherland for HIE, said: “Thursday’s events were very successful. The presentations were well attended with everyone keen to participate.
“Aurora kept their window under wraps with a ‘watch this space’ sign, with the afternoon’s events culminating in the official unveiling to a gathered crowd.
“To finally see the installation displayed for everyone to enjoy was great. Caithness has fully embraced the Mòd and is showcasing the area to the full.”
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is sponsoring An Comunn Gàidhealach with up to £50,000 to support the 107th Mod, which attracts competitors from Gaelic communities throughout the UK, Ireland, Australia, Germany, Canada and the USA and is considered the biggest event of the Gaelic calendar, offering a fascinating range of events.
