Media release: Membership comes under the spotlight at Voluntary Arts Scotland event

FOR many arts and crafts groups, membership is the lifeblood of the organisation – both in terms of finance and people.

But in this era of virtual social networking, is membership the best way to go?

The Art of Conversation – Membership or Bust? is Voluntary Arts Scotland’s response to this dilemma.

Taking place at the Albany Learning and Conference Centre in Glasgow on Friday 8th October, this one-day event will give people the chance to think about how they recruit members to their group – and how to keep the ones they already have.

Begins a spokesperson: “We’ll have an interesting case study from the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, a talk on using digital media from Glasgow’s Citizens’ Theatre and a look at ‘Up For Arts’, a fantastic campaign run by our sister organisations Voluntary Arts England and Ireland, which saw our colleagues working alongside the BBC to publicise the voluntary arts – and even taking a piano onto the streets of Northern Ireland to encourage people to get involved.

“We’ll also be talking about our plans to host a Voluntary Arts Celebration Week in May 2011, which we hope will give arts and crafts groups across Scotland the chance to showcase their activities and tell others how much fun taking part in the arts can be.”

Places at The Art of Conversation – Membership or Bust start from as little as £15, and include a tasty lunch, live entertainment and invaluable networking opportunities. To read more about the event and book a place, please visit www.vascotland.org.uk
