BRODICK Castle is the backdrop for a spectacular display of artworks to mark the launch of the Arran Arts Heritage Trail.
The unique projection images feature the work of Joan Eardley, Jessie M King, Craigie Aitchison and Alasdair Gray, amongst others.
The image projections – combined with a public online symposium, chaired by broadcaster and writer Kirsty Wark – mark the launch of the trail on the 29th April.
The Isle of Arran has been the inspiration for many iconic artists and in collaboration with members of the local community, 20 locations with a featured artist have been identified to establish a new island-wide Arran Arts Heritage Trail. The trail aims to celebrate and document this rich cultural heritage for current and future generations.
Project manager, Ruth Impey, said: “We are thrilled with these unique images. The artists featured on the trail are iconic, as is the sight of Brodick Castle from the bay, and the visual impact of the artworks lighting up the castle is extraordinary.
“This is the first time Brodick Castle has been used for projections and combined with the symposium, discussing artists who have been inspired by Arran’s landscapes, we couldn’t think of a more inspirational or striking way to mark the launch of the Arran Arts Heritage Trail.”
Twenty hand-carved stones, made of reclaimed red Arran sandstone, mark the physical trail across the island and the trail can be explored virtually through a new website by clicking on trail map locations, playing short films, listening to revived Arran dialect Gaelic location names and discovering further artworks and artists held in an extensive database.
Tim Keyworth, the National Trust for Scotland’s manager at Brodick Castle, gardens and country park, said: “We’re delighted to see Brodick Castle used in such a spectacular way to support the Arran Arts Heritage Trail.
“As life starts to return to normal, initiatives like this will be all the more enjoyable for the local community, and will also help draw visitors back to Arran to our mutual benefit and pleasure. We’re really looking forward to the launch of the island-wide trail and are thrilled to have a place marker for the trail in the Castle grounds.
“We’re sure the trail will introduce more people to the beauty of Arran’s landscapes and the inspiration they’ve provided to so many artists over the years.”
