Media release: Boost for bakers as Scottish bars and restaurants begin to re-open for the first time since lockdown

ALONG with hairdressers and barbers, cinemas, tourist attractions, places of worship and childcare settings, bars and restaurants in Scotland can now all reopen from today with a range of new safety measures in place.

Nicola Sturgeon said it is “the biggest step so far” in exiting lockdown, which was implemented in March.

Bakers throughout Scotland, who supply the food service sector, have warmly welcomed the move and are hoping that this might provide the boost their businesses need to start the process of recovering from the impacts of Covid-19 and the lockdown.

Chief executive, Alasdair Smith, of Scottish Bakers, which supports and protects the interests of Scotland’s bakers, said: “The Coronavirus pandemic brought unprecedented pressures to bear on our Scottish Bakers members, as restrictions took effect.

“While the majority of our members were able to continue production during this time, many were affected by the drop in customer footfall and the closure of the hospitality sector, as well as the challenges of implementing the required social distancing measures and concern for the wellbeing of their staff and customers.

“The move to further ease lockdown, which has come into effect today, is particularly welcome for those members that supply the hospitality and food service sectors. We know many businesses for whom this move is an essential part of their own recovery plans.”

He added: “We’re delighted that the improving public health situation and further easing of lockdown will bring much-needed custom back to our bars and restaurants and that this, in turn, will boost bakery businesses as they get back to work delivering freshly-baked breads, pies and sweet treats to the food service sector.”
