Media release: From messenger bike to online shopping

Fisher and Donaldson

WITH the temporary closure of their seven shops and cafes in late March, 100-year-old family bakery, Fisher & Donaldson, have set up an online shop to do home deliveries in Fife and Tayside.

To continue providing for their loyal customers and those in isolation, the family business has taken over 7,000 orders and delivered over 10,000 fudge doughnuts in the area since setting up the service!

Baking in Fife, Scotland, since 1919, Fisher & Donaldson is a Royal Warrant-holding institution known for traditional baking, most notably their ‘world famous’ fudge doughnut.

Since the temporary closure of their shops and cafes, the bakery has had to adapt to the new ways of shopping brought about by the pandemic, so they sought to set up a new delivery service and online shop as quickly as they could.

A family business, Fisher & Donaldson has been in the Milne family for five generations. Ben Milne, fifth generation bakery and director, said: “It was incredibly difficult for us to make the decision to close our shops back in March, and business has been very different since then, but we knew we could adapt and provide for our customers.

“This meant setting up a brand new online shop in a matter of days, and taking the plunge to offer a home delivery service, something we haven’t done since my grandad was a teenager riding around Cupar on his messenger bike!

“Times have certainly changed since then, and our customers can now place orders on our online shop, before noon for next day delivery.

“The orders aren’t going out on a bike anymore, but our team of drivers offer a friendly face to our customers in lockdown, many of whom won’t see anyone else that day. It has been heartwarming to see the wonderfully colourful windows on our rounds, and wave and smile to customers from afar. It certainly cheers us up as much as it seems to our customers.”

Fisher & Donaldson offers deliveries to those in KY15, KY16 and DD1-DD6.

Customers can currently pre-order online for ‘click & collect’ from the Ceres Road, Cupar bakery, and from Monday 25th May there will be a limited run of products and coffees available for takeaway on a one-in-one-out basis. The bakery has plans to re-open locations in St Andrews and Dundee soon for ‘click & collect’ and takeaway too, after a trial period in Cupar. Details of the shop openings will be announced on the bakery’s website and social media soon. Visit www.fisheranddonaldson.com
