Media release: Barnett’s Bakery of Anstruther focuses on caring for community during COVID-19

A BAKERY in the Fife town of Anstruther has focussed its efforts on caring for the community during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Begins Mhorag Barnett, of Barnett’s Bakery: “On 15 March, we started offering a free delivery service to our most vulnerable and elderly customers in the community who were unable to visit our shops.

“We sought advice on how best to do this, to ensure the safety of both our customers and staff and some of the changes were as simple as ordering an additional contactless card reader which meant that we were able to accept card payment for these deliveries.

“We launched on 9th April, offering free delivery for our customers here in the East Neuk, and, over time, we have been able to extend the delivery service to all our local customers, not just the vulnerable.

“We’ve continued to work closely with our wholesale customers who are also providing vital services within their local communities too, from Kirkcaldy to St Andrews to Dundee.

“But we wanted to do so much more, so we have also been donating bakery goods to Cupar Children and Families Social Work Team to help feed local families during this time of crisis. They’re able to choose from a selection of breads, savouries and cakes.

“This has been achieved whilst maintaining the essentials in all of our shops; we’ve also been able to keep up with the pick-me-ups too: there have been extra cupcakes and cream cakes every day, which have been selling faster than we can keep up!

“And as flour became rarer than gold dust in the supermarkets, customers turned to us… So we divided what we could into 1kg bags and started selling three types of flour, dried yeast and jars of our sourdough starter in our shops.

“The response from our customers has been phenomenal. Baking is a passion and that keeps us going at a time like this. We ran a fun competition through Facebook and Instagram to see what our customers have been baking with our ingredients: most creative, best-looking, most colourful and the biggest. Our customers really engaged with this, and we love seeing their creations!

“Throughout this, our shop staff and bakers have gone above and beyond, and, for the excellent team around us, we are incredibly grateful.”
