A LOCAL Orkney baker, Argos, wanted to share with its customers what three weeks of lockdown looks like for the bakery and the effect the pandemic has had on this tight-knit community… so they launched a competition to share ‘bakes and smiles’.
“This virus has had a huge impact on the whole nation and it can feel a little daunting at times,” says Ewan McDill at Argos. “So we wanted to break it down through the lens of our business and make it real.
“This pandemic has affected our staff and how many of them are able to work but that has not stopped us baking every day to help feed our community and we are proud and thankful for that.
“We have changed the way we do business by revising our opening hours, changing how we bake and serve to observe strict social distancing rules. We are aware many cannot leave home at all so we have brought in a delivery service which was hugely well received over the Easter weekend.
“But we could not have done it without our customers respecting the new rules around social distancing and without our suppliers who have kept us going with fantastic fresh produce.”
To say thank you, and to share some joy during tough times, Argos launched a Peedie Baker competition encouraging the younger members of the community to take smiling snaps of their home bakes and, over Easter, the grown-ups got a go with the Easter Show Stopper competition.
“And we think you will agree the happy smiling faces of the budding bakers of the future really are a tonic at this time of trouble. Enjoy.”
