A NEW series of programmes on BBC ALBA taps into the growing popularity of upcycling and shows viewers how to save money, and the planet, by transforming old discarded items into something new and beautiful.
Series three of Dreach Ùr starts on Wednesday March 18 and the presenter, Shona Masson from Skye, is not only on a mission to reduce waste by showing people how they can recycle, she also has loads of fun as she creates exciting new things.
Shona said: “Making useful things from what might otherwise be thrown away is so rewarding and a great way to unleash your creativity. Anything we can do to reduce the strain on the environment will help.
“This programme aims to encourage people to think about upcycling as a part of their everyday life – and most importantly it’s about having fun while you do it!”
In the first programme, Shona buys a plain white bed from a charity shop and takes it to Skye where Fiona Cruickshank transforms it for a kid’s bedroom. Shona also makes a solar system using baubles and a football, and brightens up a toy box using colour and some Gaelic.
Shona meets Peter Macqueen at Vanilla Ink jewellery studio in Glasgow in programme three and they melt down some old silver jewellery that she found in a charity shop in Glasgow to create new pieces. She also makes pom-pom earrings from old wool, and sands back and transforms a jewellery box.
An old chest of drawers from a charity shop in Glasgow is transformed with help from Sian Mackay in Lewis in programme three. Shona also uses glass paints to give a plain mirror some colour, and gives a bread bin an even more vibrant makeover.
In the fourth programme, Shona buys a lampshade and a couple of skirts in a charity shop in Glasgow and takes them to Inverness where Angela MacMillan makes them into a lovely mobile for a baby’s room. Shona also makes some bunting from old baby clothes, and a storage space for nappies from an old box unit.
Some old scaffolding planks and fence posts that Shona picks up from Glasgow Wood Recycling get made into a stunning dining table by joiner Angus MacIver in programme five. Shona also makes coasters using Plaster of Paris and some broken pottery, and re-upholsters an old dining chair.
Programme six sees a coffee table from a charity shop in the south side of Glasgow transformed in Skye by Rona Nicolson using decoupage and a glass-etching pen. Shona also turns a mug tree into a key holder, and makes potpourri using pinecones, gathered petals and lavender.
And Shona takes a pair of flip-flops to Eilidh Lewsey in Glasgow in programme seven who makes them into a pair of crocheted slippers and also makes a rag pillow from an old dress, and makes a bean bag tray, using real beans.
In the last programme, Shona helps Rachel Mackay in Glasgow transform an office desk from plain white to trendy and bright. She also makes a recycling bin using papier-mâché, and a pencil holder from a coffee tin.
