AS the National Lottery prepares to celebrate its 25th birthday this month, communities across Scotland will be able to explore and share their creativity through a diverse range of arts projects thanks to Awards for All funding.
173 community groups and projects across Scotland will share over £1.2 million of National Lottery Community Funding through Creative Scotland under the Awards for All scheme.
Awards for All is a joint awards programme from the National Lottery Community Fund, Creative Scotland and sportscotland.
Projects across the breadth of Scotland, from dance tuition to community choirs, have been supported in this latest round of funding including: Lyth Arts Centre, Grassmarket Community Project, Jhankar Beats, A-Team Productions and Electric Theatre Workshop.
Creative Scotland’s Graham Reid said: “As we approach the National Lottery’s 25th birthday, these fantastic projects are great examples of the work Lottery funding makes possible.
“Ranging from dance to theatre to community choirs, these programmes demonstrate the creativity of communities across Scotland.”
Awards for All funding will support Lyth Arts Centre to develop Create & Connect Caithness, a project which seeks to bring older people and those living with dementia and their carers in Caithness together to engage in stimulating creative activity. The project will establish a buddying system to connect isolated and vulnerable older people in Caithness to cultural activity in the area.
Charlotte Mountford, co-director, Lyth Arts Centre, said: “Lyth Arts Centre is delighted to receive funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to develop Create & Connect Caithness. The Community Fund is encouraging us as a charity to be innovative about the spaces we create to support older people in rural areas.”
Grassmarket Community Project has received funding towards their collaboration with award-winning theatre group, Grassmarket Projects. The collaboration will deliver a dynamic and creative performance piece, written by and starring people with lived experience of social exclusion, including those with experience of homelessness, people with disabilities, people with experience of addiction and people from the LGBTQI community. All aspects of the performances will be focused on sharing the lived experiences of the players and participants.
The performance, which will explore themes of togetherness and community, will be set at Christmas – a time when many of the group’s members feel particularly isolated. As they mingle at a Christmas party, the play’s characters discuss issues including family, loneliness and poverty, as well as their hopes and aspirations for the future.
Jhankar Beats has received funding to provide 48, weekly low-cost dance workshops to BME children in Glasgow.
A-Team Productions, an Edinburgh-based not-for-profit youth musical theatre group, has received funding towards the production and performance of two musicals in the 2020 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The group aims to build young people’s confidence by enabling them to perform on stage, as well as removing financial barriers to participation in the theatre arts.
Electric Theatre Workshop will also be supported by Awards for All funding to deliver the largest vocal ensemble in southern Scotland, Dumfries Community Choir.
