THE National newspaper – the daily newspaper supporting Scottish independence – is to achieve another publishing first, with a Welsh edition.

As many as 2,000 copies of the free special edition will be distributed in Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday 7th September as Welsh independence supporters turn out for a march by ALL Under One Banner Cymru.

Featuring eight-pages of news plus sport, the bilingual giveaway will include stories in both English and Welsh.

This will include an exclusive article by Adam Price, leader of Plaid Cymru.

He told The National: “Something’s happening in Wales. There’s a surge of interest in Welsh independence and it’s good to see that The National is taking notice.

“Saturday’s March in Merthyr is one more sign that we in Wales will not be far behind our friends in Scotland in campaigning for independence to safeguard our future in Europe. We wish we had a newspaper like The National publishing in Wales. Why don’t you come and join us?”

Almost 1,500 people have indicated that they will attend the independence event, which is backed by campaigning group, Yes Cymru, following on from a successful event in Caernarfon in July.

The first took place in Cardiff in May and was attended by almost 3,000 people. Former Wales goalkeeper, Neville Southall, and Welsh Assembly Member, Delyth Jewell, are amongst those set to turn out in Merthyr this weekend.

A recent YouGov poll put support for Welsh independence above 50 per cent for the first time.

The National’s editor, Callum Baird, said: “No-one paying attention to politics in today’s ‘dis-United Kingdom’ could have failed to notice the change in Wales.

“The National is delighted to produce the special edition and reflect that change in a media landscape where independence supporters are often poorly served. We’re sure the march will be a great success.”
