Photo, interview and have-a-go opportunity: Launch of new Skiff boat in preparation for World Championship Coastal Rowing (SkiffieWorlds)
Date: 2pm on Saturday 23rd March 2019
Venue: Loch Ryan Shoreline, Stranraer
About: The coastal rowing world championships are taking place in Stranraer this summer! The launch of Skiff No. 2 on 23rd March is a chance to find out more about the SkiffieWorlds, speak to organisers and try the sport for yourself!
Try coastal rowing: After the official launch ceremony, members of the media and attending guests are invited to join in to experience coastal rowing for yourself – no prior experience necessary.
THE SkiffieWorlds is the Coastal Rowing World Championship for a class of boat invented in Scotland ten years ago that has now gone global. Rowing teams from South Africa, Tasmania, Canada, USA and more, will gather in south west Scotland for a major world championship regatta from 8-13 July.
What’s different about this sport is that building the boat is a fundamental part of the sport. In doing so, the sport brings coastal communities together and teaches skills. It is considered to be the most accessible water sport in the world, attracting a wide mix of ages. Scotland now sees boat building, oar making, practices, regattas and meetings all around the Scottish coast.
The SkiffieWorlds is designed to be a spectator event, with on-shore entertainment and festivities, as well as live-action drone footage screenings and live sporting commentary of the races.
The event is also a fantastic opportunity to ‘wet your appetite’ ahead of Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters 2020 which will shine a spotlight on the destination’s wonderful inland and coastal landscapes through a programme of activity and events.
