A NEW fostering scheme which aims to attract more foster carers is to be introduced in Moray.
There are currently 50 fostering households in Moray and, as well as addressing the need to recruit for foster carers, the new scheme will provide foster carers with consistent and good quality support; sufficient allowances to cover the real cost of caring for foster children; access to quality training and development; respite and holiday breaks.
Four skill levels will be introduced, with fees reflecting the level of skill each foster carer has, as well as the number of children cared for.
A consultation with foster carers has been completed which demonstrated “overwhelming support for a new scheme”.
The new scheme will give foster carers the chance to complete SVQ qualifications, advancement through the skill levels offered, and offer increased support when caring for children with complex needs.
Chair of Moray Council’s Children & Young People’s Services Committee, Cllr Sonya Warren, said the new scheme will, importantly, provide choice and quality for children in need of foster care.
“The number of fostering households in Moray is declining so we hope by introducing this new scheme that we can recruit more foster carers and retain our existing foster carers. Their support is invaluable and often life-changing for the young people they care for, and their skills and commitment should be championed.
“I think it’s vital we encourage more residents to become foster carers so we can continue to provide foster care locally. If you’re interested in fostering please let us know.”
