THE Royal Television Society (RTS), one of Britain’s leading forums for television and related media, has awarded the recipients for its 2018 undergraduate bursary scheme. The prestigious scheme aims to widen participation in and access to the media industry, supporting talented students from lower income backgrounds seeking to pursue careers in television.
The 2018 bursary scheme offers 25 bursaries for Television Production and Broadcast Journalism students and seven bursaries for Computing and Engineering undergraduates bringing the total amount invested in the two schemes to £133,000 this year.
The Television Production and Broadcast Journalism Bursary awardees are: Mahnoor Akhlaq; Precious Arabambi; Maikah Blake, Drew Bunyan; Callum Cheswick; Ryan Delaney; Sarah Docherty; Kareem Elshehawy; Sulaiman Fell; Uhupa Hangero; Amy Hollywood; Hollie Hughes; Kathryn Macleod; Donald Matheson; Joseph McCawley; Bethany Mckeever; Aimee Saoirse Morton; Stephanie Ndaguba; Emily Nolan; Katie Price; Isabelle Thompson; Laura Wiggett; and Natalia Wiktorowicz.
Those receiving a Computing and Engineering Bursary are: Temisan Atsegoh; Craig Dick; Michael Gucluer; Muhammad Aanish Imtiaz; Daisy Kennedy; Raghib Mirza; and Thomas Mullan.
Additionally, the Steve Hewlett scholarship has been awarded to Georgia May Keetch and Liam Warden. The scholarship supports students pursuing a career in current affairs journalism or documentary production and was set up in honour of the late Steve Hewlett, renowned journalist, documentary filmmaker, programme editor, television executive, media commentator, newspaper columnist, television presenter and Radio 4 broadcaster.
Theresa Wise, RTS CEO, said “Television needs a broader pool of young people to enter the industry and flourish. The RTS is delighted to be playing a key role in this, mentoring and supporting low income talented students from all over the country. Our first two years of graduates are doing us proud and we look forward to supporting our new first years into their future careers.”
During their studies, each recipient will receive £1,000 per year to assist with their expenses and living costs. In addition, each beneficiary will receive free membership of the RTS and associate membership of the Hospital Club – a private members club for those in the creative industries – while studying, and one year’s free membership of the RTS after they graduate.
In their final year of study, the RTS will also aim to set-up mentoring opportunities with one of their industry members. Two undergraduates have also been awarded the Steve Hewlett scholarship and will also receive £2,000 per annum from the Steve Hewlett memorial fund supported by the RTS and The Media Society.
The recipients were selected by a panel of industry professionals following an open call to UK students applying for courses at accredited universities.

Sarah Docherty from Newtownards is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Film Studies and Production at Queen’s University Belfast.
Kareem Elshehawy from London is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Television Production course at the University of Westminster.
Sulaiman Fell from Leeds is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Journalism course at Leeds Beckett University.
Uhupa Hangero from Peterborough is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Journalism course at the University of Lincoln.
Amy Hollywood from Wolverhampton is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Journalism course at City University.
Hollie Hughes from Liverpool is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Journalism course at the University of Salford.
Kathryn Macleod from Isle of Lewis is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism course at Glasgow Caledonian.
Donald Matheson from Dumfries is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Journalism Studies course at Stirling University.
Joseph McCawley from East Kilbride is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Film Making and Screen Writing course at the University of the West of Scotland.
Bethany Mckeever from Londonderry is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Film Studies and Production course at Queen’s University Belfast.

Each year global television leaders gather to discuss what the future holds for television at our London Conference or the RTS Cambridge Convention.
Alongside our engaged community of over 4,500 full members, the Society is supported by Britain and the world’s biggest broadcasters, producers and consultants, including Principle Patrons BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Sky.
Originally founded as the Television Society in 1927, the Society was granted its Royal title in 1966 and HRH The Prince of Wales became Patron of the RTS in 1997.
Today, 14 regional and national groups curate lively events and awards around the UK and Ireland, from Glasgow to Galway.
