A STUDENT from Avoch, Black Isle, has received an award which recognises the skills and qualities valued in integrated health and social care.
Adam Millington-Bailey (19) recently completed an HNC in social services with the University of the Highlands and Islands at Inverness College UHI. He was nominated for the Ina Maciver Award in light of his ability to support and inspire others and for the dedication he showed to his studies in the face of challenging circumstances.
Adam was nominated for the award by his lecturer, Wilma MacDonald. She explains: “Adam joined the HNC social services on a full-time basis in 2016. During his first semester, he was faced with multiple personal challenges which inevitably affected his studies. Adam made the difficult decision to switch to part-time study and, over the last 18 months, his resilience, perseverance and ability resulted in him gaining an A in his graded unit project.
“He also received very positive feedback from his placement. He used his challenges positively to engage with the individuals he was supporting and developed a mature, creative and caring approach to supporting young people who are close to his age. The young people he worked with have development and behavioural issues and Adam proved to be a very positive and influential role model.
“It is for these reasons that the HNC social services team nominated Adam for the Ina Maciver Award. His resilience and passion have been the driving force for him continuing and successfully completing his HNC.”
The award was created in memory of Ina Maciver, the university’s former subject network leader for health and social care, who was devoted to learning, teaching and to students’ personal development. Sponsored by NHS Highland, the award is presented to a University of the Highlands and Islands’ health or social care student each year.
Adam was presented with a trophy and a cheque for £100 by Stephen Loch, NHS Highland’s lead nurse for workforce planning and development, at Inverness College UHI’s graduation ceremony on Thursday 4 October.
Speaking about the award, Adam said: “When I stared this course, I never would have imagined that I would be honoured with this award, as well as earning a high grade. There have been quite a few ups and downs during my time at university and I would like to thank my friends, family and my college tutors for providing me with the incredible support and encouragement that got me to where I am today. I promise to demonstrate the same passion and dedication that I have shown during my HNC while studying social work at Robert Gordon University.”
