AMY Howerska, the top-class comedian whose great jokes and wonderful turn of phrase elevate her above many of her peers, is to headline this week’s Nodha, The Gilded Balloon’s new comedy night.

Edinburgh’s ultimate comedy test-ground for new acts and old pros heads to its new home of The Basement Theatre at The Rose Theatre, 204 Rose Street, on Wednesday 29 November at 20.00, as part of The Gilded Balloon’s new winter programme.

Born to a ‘trained killer’ father and a skydiving mother – a Polish Irish Catholic Jew, raised in Wales – Amy Howerska is a diversity box-ticking dream. Presenting her stand-up with vim, vigour and volume she is an one-woman voice machine, populating the stage with barmy Welsh cousins, Bradford grannies and East End gangster-loving aunties.

In her commanding and upbeat sets, she also covers some of the terrible jobs she’s had to endure, before becoming a full-time comic; her new boyfriend and his weird family and her hatred of ‘mansplaining’.

Line-ups for the Gilded Balloon’s Nodha (adjective – 1. new 2. fresh 3. recent 4. modern 5. unfamiliar) are made up of a mixture of old hands wanting to road test new material and newer acts finding their comedy stride. The full line-ups are announced on the Gilded Balloon’s Facebook page in the days leading up to the gig – https://www.facebook.com/Gildedballoon.

Christopher Macarthur-Boyd, the Glaswegian King of Sad Style, will not only host the evening’s entertainment but will also take the opportunity to try out out some new gags while he’s on stage. His self-mockery and ability to tell gags at his own expense are one of his many loveable assets.

There are even rumours that a well-known face of stage and TV will be working some brand-new, mind-bending routines in front of an audience for the very first time.

With tickets only £3.00 and £2.00 concession it is fantastic value for money for a relaxed night of new and untested comedy. What will Amy Howerska, Christopher Macarthur-Boyd and their comedy chums have in store this week?
