Media release: Marine expert to present public lecture

Professor Sheila Heymans

A LEADING expert in marine science will present a free lecture in Oban next month.

Professor Sheila Heymans, head of science at the Scottish Association of Marine Science UHI, will be speaking as part of the University of the Highlands and Islands’ public lecture series.

Professor Heymans’ talk will explore the technique of ecosystem modelling, a method traditionally used to describe the flows and pools in marine systems. Using examples from around the globe, she will demonstrate how modelling can also provide insights into the effects activities such as overfishing and pollution can have on the marine environment.

She explains: “I will use my experience of modelling ecosystems in South Africa, Namibia, the Gulf of Alaska and the west coast of Scotland to show that ecosystem models are a very useful way to summarise the large quantity of information scientists have collected over the past 100 years.

“These models are a good way to turn data into information which can then be used as evidence in the application of new policies.”

Professor Heymans’ inaugural professorial lecture will take place from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Thursday 16 November at the Scottish Association of Marine Science UHI, Oban.

Attendees will also be able to join by video conference.
