IF you are aged over 65 and live in south-east Edinburgh, the exciting Creating Community event is a must-visit this Thursday (12 October) at the Gilmerton Society Hall at 27 Drum Street from 1pm to 3.30pm.
Creating Community is a free celebration of local creative groups and is being organised by the LOOPS Community Navigator Project – as part of Luminate, Scotland’s creative ageing festival.
Community Navigator South East is a Local Opportunities for Older People (LOOPs) project delivered by Health in Mind.
Jenny Green works for Health in Mind and is the LOOPS Community Navigator for south-east Edinburgh, who is helping to organise the event. She highlighted how Creating Community will showcase local groups and give everyone coming along the chance to join in or try something new.
She said: “The talented Gilmerton Singers will open the event with some well-known songs and we’re hoping to raise the roof with everyone, either joining in their sing-along or tapping their feet.
“People can try out circle dancing and hula hooping as well as joining the Purly Queens in knitting for charity.
“There will be lots of fantastic groups to meet and things to see and do with refreshments to keep everyone going.”
Creating Community will be an interesting, friendly and fun event which will give people the opportunity to try out something new or to rediscover the enjoyment of a previous hobby.
The LOOPS Community Navigator project holds friendly, informal information stations across the whole of Edinburgh. They are usually in local supermarkets, post offices, GP surgeries or libraries and anyone interested can sign up for the free, twice-yearly magazine, Discover.
The magazines are full of ideas activities, groups and events as well as information on how to access support and services and what you can expect when you do.
