THE Royal Television Society (RTS) – the leading forum for television and related media and an educational charity whose purpose is to promote the art and science of television – has today announced the recipients of its 2017 undergraduate bursary scheme, which aims to widen participation in media and related industries and support talented students from lower income backgrounds seeking to pursue a career in television.
The 2017 bursary scheme offers 22 bursaries for television production and broadcast journalism students and seven bursaries for computing and engineering undergraduates, bringing the total amount invested in the two schemes this year to £87,000.
The schemes are funded by the RTS with support from All3Media, who have sponsored two places.
Those receiving a television production and broadcast journalism bursary include Josephine Bakewell, Jessica Bell, Isaac Burnett, Warren Cook, Oliver Cummins Hylton, Hugo Docking, Arjun Dosanjh, Eleanor Duffy, Lillian Grant, Ali Hassan, Eve Hill, Thomas Mason, Tom Maynard, Charlie McMorine, Andrew Michael, Jordanna Murray, Isla Reid, Rebecca Schott, Jake Sparey, James Reilly Wayne, Micah Williams and Corrie Young.
Those receiving a computing and engineering bursary include Adam Kona, Tara Mulcahy-Murray, Jacob Nixon, Tarik Ourida, Taariq Pala, Phoebe Quinn and Leela Tandon-Stretten.
During their studies, each recipient will be given £1,000 per year to assist with their expenses and living costs. In addition, each beneficiary will receive free membership of the RTS and The Hospital Club while studying, and one year’s free membership of the RTS after they graduate. In their final year of study, the RTS will also aim to set-up mentoring opportunities with one of its industry members.
In addition, the first Steve Hewlett Scholarship has been bestowed on Oliver Cummins Hylton, from Lincoln, who is studying Broadcast Journalism at the University of Salford, where Hewlett was a visiting professor.
The Steve Hewlett Scholarship is awarded via the Steve Hewlett Memorial Fund which has been set-up by The Media Society and the Royal Television Society in memory of the celebrated broadcaster who died at the beginning of the year. The recipient will receive an additional £1,000 per year, on top of the money already received from the RTS bursary scheme, for three years, plus membership of the RTS, Media Society and affiliate Hospital Club membership while studying.

The schemes are important as they offer those from lower income backgrounds not only financial support, but access to mentoring and a network of contacts within the broadcasting industry.
“It is great to see the schemes continue to grow and such a high calibre of applicants seeking to begin their journey within the industry. This year, we have awarded two additional bursaries bringing the total to 29. This includes the Steve Hewlett Scholarship. Steve was a vehement campaigner for improving access to the media industry and we are pleased to carry on his legacy through this scheme.
“As well as welcoming our new bursary recipients, 2017 also sees our first round of graduates. There have been some excellent results and I look forward to supporting and following the progression and their careers.”

* Lillian Grant from Salisbury is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Television and Video Production course at Southampton Solent University.
* Ali Hassan from Edgware in London is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Film Production course at University of Portsmouth
* Eve Hill from Hunworth is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BSc (Hons) Film and Television Production course at University of York.
* Thomas Mason from Liverpool is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BA (Hons) Media / Film Production course at University of Staffordshire.
* Tom Maynard from Chichester is awarded £1,000 per year towards studying the BSc (Hons) Film and Television Production course at University of York.
