Passengers invited to lead Scotland’s national orchestra at Glasgow’s busy transport hub
GLASGOW Airport will be asking its passengers to conduct themselves with flair and élan on Thursday morning, when the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) invites willing journey-makers to take to the podium and lead the ensemble in their chosen tune.
Scotland’s national orchestra will be performing at the transport hub at 10.00am on Thursday 31 August and are asking all those passing through the airport to voice their interest in conducting the 50-strong ensemble through social media prior to the big day. RSNO assistant conductor, Holly Mathieson, will be on hand to give guidance to the budding baton-wielders.
Glasgow Airport will be hosting a poll on its Facebook page to pick the piece of music to be performed by the RSNO that ten lucky passengers will get to conduct. The choices will be: Overture from Rossini’s William Tell (Theme from The Lone Ranger); Montagues and Capulets from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet (theme from The Apprentice) and Scottish ceilidh favourite, Eightsome Reels.
Said RSNO assistant conductor, Holly Mathieson: “There’s nothing to compare with the thrill of leading a large professional orchestra playing the music you love. It’s my pleasure to invite passengers to take my place on the podium and bring one of Scotland’s busiest international gateways to life with the sound of music.”
Added Steven Marshall, head of Airline Marketing and Development at Glasgow Airport: “The Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s annual performance is one of the highlights of the year for both the terminal team and of course our passengers.
“A performance from the country’s national orchestra is the perfect way to bring to a close what has been a fantastic Best of Scotland campaign.”
In addition to conducting one of the world’s most famous orchestras, participants will each receive a goodie bag courtesy of Glasgow Airport and the RSNO, and the apprentice conductor deemed the most proficient will win vouchers to spend in the airport’s retail and catering outlets.
Passengers and visitors to Glasgow Airport who wish to register their interest in conducting the orchestra on Thursday should do so via the RSNO’s Facebook (@royalscottishnationalorchestra), Twitter (@RSNO), Instagram (Royal Scottish National Orchestra) accounts or by informing a member of Glasgow Airport staff before 9.30am on the day.
There are a limited number of opportunities to conduct the orchestra so places will be given on a first-come-first-served basis.
