Magazine festival coming to Central Hall, Edinburgh on 15 September

BEST-selling crime writer, Ian Rankin, has today been added to the line-up for Magfest – Scotland’s top festival of magazines, organised by PPA Scotland.
In an exclusive Magfest special, the Edinburgh literary legend will sit down with PPA CEO and ex-Smash Hits and Empire editor-in-chief, Barry McIlheney, to discuss his lifelong love of magazines, the craft of writing, and their shared love of the one and only Van Morrison.
Now 30 years since his most famous character – Detective Inspector John Rebus – first hit the page, Rankin remains one of Scotland’s most successful and widely-loved authors. He has sold millions of books worldwide, and in 2002 received an OBE for his services to literature.
PPA CEO Barry McIlheney, said that he was “absolutely thrilled” that Rankin would be appearing at this year’s Magfest.
“Ian is a globally-renowned writer who has painted a unique picture of Edinburgh and Scotland to the wider world though his best-selling tales of John Rebus and other works,” said McIlheney.
“He is also a magazine nut, and to have him close the show at Magfest is an indication of the growing importance and reputation of this flagship PPA Scotland event.”
Rankin joins a stellar bill of magazine leaders, including chief executive of Future PLC, Zillah Byng-Thorne; VICE UK’s executive creative director, Alex Miller; Lucie Cave, editorial director at Bauer Media and former editor-in-chief of Heat; John Brown, founder of John Brown Publishing; James Hyman and Tory Turk, curators of the world’s largest collection of magazines, The Hyman Archive; Egmont’s commercial director, Siobhan Galvin; The Drum’s deputy editor Cameron Clarke; The Big Issue editor, Paul McNamee; Luise Mulholland, direct marketing director at Dennis Publishing; John MacDonald, editor of Cable magazine and director of Scottish Global Forum; Alec Dudson, editor of Intern magazine; and Cathy Olmedillas, founder and editor of Anorak.
Now in its sixth year, Magfest is the must-attend event for Scotland’s vibrant publishing industry. Last year, PPA Scotland welcomed a sell-out crowd of more than 350 magazine professionals and enthusiasts. This year, the capacity has increased to more than 450.
