Media release: Moray man takes part in charity Sportive for sixth time

Mervyn

A BUSINESSPERSON from Moray recently geared up to raise vital funds for a North-east charity by participating in an annual sponsored bike ride.

Mervyn Stanley, from Elgin, took part in the Glen Moray Sportive for the sixth year in a row, in aid of North East Sensory Services (NESS), a charity that supports around 1,100 people in Moray who have significant sight and/or hearing loss by providing a wide range of services.

The Glen Moray Bike Ride, which took place on Sunday, 25 June, featured three cycling options, a ten-mile family friendly route, a 25-mile route and 75-mile sportive.

This was the 18th year that it was hosted by NESS, with support from Moray Council, and was sponsored for the fifth time by Elgin’s Glen Moray Distillery, which was the start and finishing point for riders.

Mervyn, the managing director of Cameron Carnegie, participated in the Sportive alongside 25 of his teammates from Elgin Cycle Club, whilst his wife, Lindsey, and 14 year-old son, Rory, both helped out at the food and drink stops along the route.

The 55 year-old first got into cycling after taking part in a charity race from London to Paris in 2008, he then fell in love with the sport after noticing a dramatic improvement in his fitness.

He has since taken part in a number of Sportives across Scotland, but is especially passionate about cycling in his local area. He is a cycling ambassador for Moray Speyside Tourism and spends a lot of his free time encouraging others to get involved with local cycling events.

Mr Stanley said: “I first participated in the Glen Moray Sportive after Neil Skene from NESS got in touch to see if I’d like to get involved. I’m a keen cyclist and I’ve helped fundraise for NESS in the past, so it was a very easy decision to make.

“I managed to get NESS involved in Ride the North and also helped NESS become the charity beneficiary of the Moray Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner, so I’ve really got to know the charity, the services it provides and the impact is has on the lives of sensory impaired people across the North-east.

“Once again, this year’s Glen Moray event was thoroughly enjoyable, the views are spectacular and it’s always an great day for everyone involved.

Bruce Cruickshank, fundraising assistant for NESS, said: “We are very grateful to Mervyn and his teammates at Elgin Cycle Club for their involvement in the Glen Moray Bike Ride. The event is one of the biggest in our fundraising calendar and helps to raise vital funds for people of all ages across Moray.”
