A FREE exhibition – featuring over 140 of the most powerful examples of photojournalism from across the world – is to go on display at the Scottish Parliament this summer.
The World Press Photo exhibition showcases some of the most moving, challenging and thought-provoking images taken over the course of 2016, including Usain Bolt crossing the finish line at the 2016 Rio Olympics; a woman standing her ground at a rally against police violence against black men, outside the Baton Rouge Police Department in Louisiana, USA; and a carpet of monarch butterflies covering the forest floor of El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico, after a snowstorm.
The worldwide touring exhibition of award-winning photos will once again come to the Scottish Parliament from Friday 4 August – Saturday 26 August 2017, and entry is free.
The photo contest attracted entries from 5,034 photographers from 125 countries, telling contemporary stories from categories including Spot News, General News, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, People, Sports, Nature and Long Term Projects.
Announcing the exhibition, Presiding Officer, the Rt Hon Ken Macintosh MSP, said: “This outstanding exhibition highlights photojournalism’s power to tell poignant, complex and inspiring stories that influence how we see and understand the world.
“More than ever in this age of online and social media, photojournalism brings us stories faster and with greater impact than any other medium. This year is no different, with some of the most breathtaking photos yet.
“We are once again very proud that the Parliament is the only location in Scotland holding this year’s exhibition and the only Parliament to do so worldwide.
“World Press Photo has previously attracted visitors to the Parliament in their tens of thousands, and we look forward to providing even more visitors with the opportunity to take in world photojournalism at its very best.”

In its 60th year, the photo contest attracted entries from 5,034 photographers from 126 countries.
