FINALISTS for Weekly Newspaper of the Year have been announced by the Scottish Newspaper Society ahead of the 2017 Scottish Press Awards.
The newspapers shortlisted in the category for this year’s awards are the Ayrshire Post, The Falkirk Herald, Fife Free Press, Highland News, The Inverness Courier, and the Kilmarnock Standard.
A judging panel of 25 leading media figures and former editors, which for the first time in the competition’s history had a majority of female members, whittled down the final selections for the category.
The awards are organised by the Scottish Newspaper Society, and the winners of the prestigious prizes will be announced at the Awards Ceremony and Dinner on Thursday, May 11 2017, at the Radisson BLU Hotel in Glasgow.
Director of the Scottish Newspaper Society John McLellan said: “An impressive depth of coverage was maintained in all the shortlisted titles, once again demonstrating their total commitment to, and celebration of, their communities.”
The 38th Scottish Press Awards sees the introduction of a number of new categories including ‘digital team of the year’ and ‘outstanding digital journalist’ to recognise the continued expansion and development of digital news publishing on all platforms.
