Media Release: BBC commissions IMG to produce Lisbon Lions’ 50th anniversary documentary

BBC Scotland has commissioned IMG to produce an one-hour documentary, marking the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s European Cup success.

‘Glasgow ’67: The Lisbon Lions’ tells the story of how Scottish champions, Celtic, became the first British team to lift the top European crown.

The documentary takes several members of that famous team – including Bertie Auld, Jim Craig, Bobby Lennox, Willie Wallace and John Clarke – back to the Glasgow streets where they lived in 1967. Remarkably, all except one player lived within a ten-mile radius of Celtic Park.

Captained by the legendary Billy McNeill, The Bhoys battled through four home and away ties before defeating the mighty Inter Milan 2-1 in a memorable final at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon on May 25th 1967.

Ewan Angus, commissioning editor, TV, BBC Scotland, said: “Celtic’s victory in the European Cup in 1967 was a milestone – the first time a British club side had lifted the prestigious trophy. This compelling documentary is a fitting way to mark the anniversary, telling the inside story of a remarkable team and a memorable sporting occasion.”

Alex Gale, co-executive producer, IMG, alongside Hazel Irvine, said: “This is an amazing story with a very special group of players – all bar one, living so close to the ground where they played – and telling the tale of how they won the highest honour in European club football.

“It will never happen again. The programme reveals some great stories from the team, and viewers will get a flavour of how different the game and life was in Glasgow in the mid-sixties.”

Celtic’s fast-paced attacking style eventually proved too much for the more cynical, defensive approach of the Italian champions.

Inter took an early lead through Alessandro Mazzola’s seventh-minute penalty before Celtic twice hit the crossbar among their 39 other attempts on goal, eventually wearing the 11-man defence down with goals from Tommy Gemmell and Steve Chalmers.

‘Glasgow ’67: The Lisbon Lions’ was commissioned by BBC Scotland’s Ewan Angus, and is produced out of IMG’s Glasgow office.

The documentary is directed by John MacLaverty.
