SINGING sensation and the new face of the Scottish Baker of the Year competition, Michelle McManus, will be trying her hand at something new this week as she launches the 2017 search for the best bakery in the land at reigning champs, The Kandy Bar of Saltcoats, at 11am on Thursday 23rd February.
Michelle will be joining a crack team of well-known novices – including STV Glasgow’s Live at Five presenters, David Farrell and Jennifer Reoch, as well as World of Sport champion wrestler, Grado, and ‘hello foodies’ blogger, Emma Myktyn.
Under the eagle eye of champ, Stephen McAllister, and competition ambassador, couture cake queen, Mich Turner, our contestants will be attempting to:
* Jam and ice Empire Biscuits
* Cream and jam a strawberry tart
* Apply cream filling to Cream Yum Yums/Donuts
And the ‘icing on the cake’, the Mich Turner technical challenge will be to buttercream a cupcake to her exacting standards!
TV judge, Mich Turner, will once again support the competition by compering the awards which will be presented in May.
Much said: “I am really keen to see what our guests make of this years’ challenge and the results had better be good!”
The Scottish Baker of the Year Awards are the brainchild of Scottish Bakers, the trade association for bakers in Scotland who decided to search for the best baker in the land in 2012.
Now in its sixth year, the competition celebrates our love of a tasty treat from our local baker and aims to crown just one hard-working bakery Scottish Baker of the Year.
“With thousands upon thousands of pies, scones, loaves, savoury items, morning rolls, individual cakes and biscuits sold in Scotland every day, our artisan bakers work hard to keep us all going,” says Scottish Bakers’ Alan Clarke.
“This competition is based on real votes from real customers so we urge customers to vote for their best bites, every vote really does count – your local baker could take the title!”
Voting opens on 23rd February 2017 and runs until 8th March so there is not much time to vote by logging on to wwwscottishbakers.org/vote2017 – voting automatically enters you into a draw to win one of six Apple watches.
A word from our 2016 winner, The Kandy Bar of Saltcoats:
“Back in May 2016, when Mich Turner announced THE KANDY BAR as Scottish Baker of the Year 2016, I simply could not contain the emotions of immense jubilation, excitement and total euphoria that flowed through my whole body.
“Rona, my wife, was exactly the same. I remember jumping up and down on the stage and then having a wee dance with Mich who whispered in my ear: ‘I think you should go and give Rona a great big hug’. Everyone in the room was cheering and clapping, it just felt great.
“The reaction from the local community, all at Team Kandy Bar, our loyal customers old and new, our family, friends, colleagues within the bakery industry and the national and local press has been overwhelming.
“Champagne, cards, letters and emails of congratulations have been pouring in.
“The amount of people who shook my hand, patted me on the back, gave me high five’s was tremendous, even people in cars were tooting their horns and putting their windows down shouting out ‘congratulations’.
“Everyone within the local community are saying that THE KANDY BAR winning these amazing accolades – we also took the World Scotch Pie Champion title earlier that year – has been great news for all the towns and local areas we have shops in. Business has been great since winning these amazing accolades.”
Stephen McAllister, The Kandy Bar
