A SCOTTISH art gallery is on a mission to blast the winter blues away with an injection of spring colour which comes straight from the heart.
Say it with… is the brainchild of Becky Walker, who owns the Green Gallery in Dollar, Clackmannanshire.
This new exhibition coincides with Valentine’s Day and includes the work of up-and-coming Scottish colourist, Alison McWhirter.
Alison, who was brought up in Dumfriesshire but now lives in the west end of Glasgow, has made a big impact on the Scottish art scene since moving back to Scotland from Bath in 2008.
Says Becky: “Alison’s work hasn’t been seen much in the east of Scotland and I am excited about introducing her to a new audience.
“We are mostly showing Alison’s flower paintings, which seems fitting as we head out of a long winter.
“We also have a large abstract work, based on the idea of water lilies, which I’m excited about. It has the same raw energy as her flower paintings but a different feeling altogether.”
Alison cites a wides variety of influences in her work including; Henri Matisse, Henry Moore and the Scottish Colourists ‘especially S.J. Peploe and E.H. Hornel’, as well as Barbara Rae, Etel Adnan and Pat Douthwaite.
“I love the still life paintings by S.J Peploe,” she says.
“Being from Dumfries and Galloway, visiting Broughton House and the work of E.H Hornel in Kircudbright always had an impact on my visual landscape. I also loved to visit Kelvingrove in Glasgow when I was a teenager too – just to stand before Cadell’s The Orange Blind.
Say it with… also features new figurative work by gallery favourites, Lucy Campbell and Margaretann Bennett, silk scarves inspired by the landscape around her loch-side home by Nikky d’Aguilar as well as ewellery and ceramics as love tokens.
