THE World Championship Scotch Pie Awards 2017 came to a climax today as Brownings the Bakers of Kilmarnock were announced as the 18th winner of the competition making them THE WORLD SCOTCH PIE CHAMPION OF 2017.
· Over 500 products were entered this year
· By nearly 100 of the nation’s best butchers and bakers
· Judged by 50 experts, Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, former Celtic player Simon Donnelly and Partick Thistle managing director and SPFL board member, Ian Maxwell
· 11 category winners selected
· But only ONE World Champion Scotch Pie
Following one of the busiest judging days ever with some 100 butchers and bakers entering over 500 pies, pasties, sausage rolls, bridies, savouries and apple pies into the competition and with some 300 hopefuls attending the awards luncheon in Cumbernauld, Brownings the Baker of Kilmarnock can truly be proud to have produced the best Scotch Pie in the land.
John Gall, of Brownings, said: “We won, I am almost speechless! To have been given the ultimate accolade today and to be able to call our pie the WORLD CHAMPION as judged by a panel of experts is just excellent.
“This award is proof of what I have known for a long time that the Brownings team is the best in the land. I am really looking forward to the year ahead and to selling more of our champion pies than ever.”
TV presenter and entrepreneur, Carol Smillie, who presented John with his award, said” “I had a feeling John would be ‘over the moon’, but even I couldn’t have prepared myself for the sheer elation.
“He knows what this win will mean for his business and I really do congratulate him and everyone at Brownings for taking the title.”
Added head judge, Ian Nelson, who oversaw the judging process to ensure only the best pies were recognised and that only the best of the best was crowned world champion: “The competition, which has run for 18 years, aims to highlight that bakers and butchers create high-quality pastry products day in day out.
“Recognising the ‘great and the good’ in this way rewards excellence and raises the bar in the industry.”
Alan Clarke, of Scottish Bakers, said: “Once again, we have brought together the best pies and baked goods in the land and today we can really celebrate the achievement of our hard working butchers and bakers.
“My heartfelt congratulations go to our winner, and indeed everyone today taking away a prize, they are all winners in my book.”
The competition is supported by Scottish Bakers which actively supports and promotes bakers and butchers in Scotland by encouraging and sharing best practise.
