SCOTTISH Swimming today announces the appointment of David Beattie and Andy Figgins to the sport’s board of directors.

Director of Finance at the University of Aberdeen, Beattie brings significant financial and sports management experience to the board, having previously been chief executive of Aberdeen Sports Village for its first six years of operation, including involvement in the Aquatics Centre from its inception to its first full year as a premier swimming facility.

As finance director, Beattie has responsibility for the university’s financial strategy, planning and budgeting and is looking to help guide Scottish Swimming in developing links with universities in Scotland.

Beattie has previous board experience and was a founder director of Garthdee Alpine Sports.

Andy Figgins joins the board with a background in coaching and sports development, having worked in swimming development at South Lanarkshire Leisure for almost 20 years: developing and implementing a strategy with the aim of increasing participation and developing the full potential of swimmers, athletes, coaches, teachers, officials and volunteers.

As a member of the Strategic Lead Group for the British Swimming Coaches Association and Scottish Swimming’s National Swimming Committee and Coaches Technical Panel, Figgins also has a wealth of experience in leading, directing and challenging on national initiatives.

As well as serving as Scottish Youth Development squad coach and Scottish Senior Bronze Coach, Figgins is lead coach for South Lanarkshire Swimming who won the top team title at the Scottish National Age Group Championships in April 2016.

With a number of years of involvement in swimming, teaching and coaching, administration and committees, stakeholder engagement, these latest appointments will ensure a current awareness and understanding of Scottish Swimming in present and future times.

Scottish Swimming’s board chair, Maureen Campbell, commented: “There were a number of exceptional candidates who came forward for the positions, making it a very difficult decision for us.

“We are, however, delighted with our eventual choice of candidates who bring strengths in finance, education, governance and development and we are confident we have an effective compliment of skills and experience.

“I look forward to officially welcoming both David and Andy at their first board meeting.”

Elizabeth Stewart, president of the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association, added: “I am delighted with the strength of the appointments made and am sure they will help drive the future direction of our sport.”

The next board meeting will be held on 20th November 2016.
