THE Scottish Rural Parliament (SRP) is holding a Brexit ‘open day’ tomorrow (Saturday) to allow delegates to its biennial conference and members of the public from rural communities across the country to air their views.
A panel – chaired by journalist and columnist, Ruth Wishart – will debate the topic, ‘What challenges and opportunities do you see for rural Scotland as the UK prepares to leave the EU and how do we make the most of the opportunities and mitigate the challenges’.
Amanda Burgauer, chair of Scottish Rural Action, which organises the Rural Parliament, said it was a vital component of democracy that the voices of the people of rural Scotland was heard in what was sure to be a decision-making process which would affect them, their businesses and generations of their families for years to come.
She added: “There are many issues which affect people in rural communities and we want to ensure that where people have a view that they have ample opportunity to express themselves.
“Anyone can attend the conference venue, the Community Campus in Brechin, Angus, at 9am and have their say.”
Other panel members will be Gerald Banks, treasurer of the National Farmers Union of Scotland; Lewis MacDonald, Labour MSP for Aberdeen and the North East; councillor Mairi Evans, SNP MSP for Angus North and Mearns; and Conservative, Peter Chapman MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy and Connectivity.
